Gravel Calculator
How much gravel you need in cubic yards and tons for a driveway, path, patio base or French drain, from length, width and depth.
How this is calculated
Volume is length times width times depth. With feet and inches, the depth is divided by 12 to get feet, and cubic feet are divided by 27 to get cubic yards (a cubic yard is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet). With meters and centimeters, the depth is divided by 100. Gravel is usually sold by the cubic yard or the ton.
Weight depends on the stone. Aggregate suppliers publish about 2,700 to 2,800 pounds (1.35 to 1.4 tons) per cubic yard for clean crushed stone, and up to about 3,000 pounds (1.5 tons) for crusher run or road base with fines, so the tons are shown as that range. If your supplier gives a figure, enter it to get one number.
For a driveway or a French drain, order a little extra: gravel settles and compacts, and edges are rarely perfectly straight. Many suppliers deliver only in whole or half cubic yards.
Limits
A rectangular area of even depth. For a round or odd-shaped area, split it into rectangles and add them. Weights are typical published figures, not a guarantee for any particular quarry.
